  18. <p>     Something in the Baton Rouge air must make politicians go
  19. partway round the bend. Before their latest session ended, the
  20. state legislators pressed every hot-button issue within reach.
  21. They not only passed the strictest anti-abortion law adopted
  22. by any state since Roe v. Wade but almost passed a measure to
  23. encourage the beating of flag burners by reducing the penalty
  24. to a $25 fine. Then they approved a law requiring record
  25. companies to place warning labels on songs that promote deviant
  26. sex, violence, drug abuse, suicide, devil worship or incest.
  27. </p>
  28. <p>     Thus Governor Buddy Roemer inherited some worthy
  29. opportunities for the veto. He used it on the abortion ban last
  30. week only days after thumbing down the lewd-lyrics law on the
  31. ground that it violated free-speech protections. The
  32. legislators may return to the capital Aug. 18 to consider
  33. whether to override the vetoes.
